Banknote processing is an automated process to check the security (or authenticity) features and the fitness of banknotes in circulation, to count and sort them by denomination and to balance deposits. This processing of currency is performed by security printing companies, central banks, financial institutions and cash-in-transit (CiT) companies.

Most banknotes have traces of cocaine on them; this has been confirmed by studies done in several countries. In 1994, the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals cited findings that in Los Angeles, three out of four banknotes were tainted by cocaine or another illicit drug.

Notaphily () is the study and collection of paper currency or banknotes. A notaphilist is a collector of banknotes or paper money, particularly as a hobby.
